How to use the rebar calculator

  1. Enter the slab length and width.
  2. Choose the bar size — US sizes #3 to #8 or metric bars — and the spacing each way.
  3. Set the edge cover (3 in / 75 mm is usual for slabs on ground).
  4. Enter the length of the stock bars you can buy (20 ft in the US; 6 or 12 m in metric countries) and the lap length for joints.

Rebar grid formulas

Bars one way = (Slab width − 2 × cover) ÷ spacing + 1 → round down, then + 1 Bar length = Slab length − 2 × cover Total length = Σ (number of bars × bar length) + laps Weight = Total length × weight per foot (or per metre)

Worked example

A 20 × 10 ft driveway pad with #4 bars at 12 in each way and 3 in cover:

  • Lengthwise bars: (120 − 6) ÷ 12 = 9.5 → 9 + 1 = 10 bars of 19.5 ft
  • Widthwise bars: (240 − 6) ÷ 12 = 19.5 → 19 + 1 = 20 bars of 9.5 ft
  • Total = 195 + 190 = 385 ft × 0.668 lb/ft = 257 lb
  • Stock bars: each 19.5 ft piece uses one 20 ft bar (10), and two 9.5 ft pieces come from one 20 ft bar (10) → 20 bars

US rebar sizes and weights

BarDiameterWeightWeight per 20 ft bar
#3⅜ in (9.5 mm)0.376 lb/ft7.5 lb
#4½ in (12.7 mm)0.668 lb/ft13.4 lb
#5⅝ in (15.9 mm)1.043 lb/ft20.9 lb
#6¾ in (19.1 mm)1.502 lb/ft30.0 lb
#7⅞ in (22.2 mm)2.044 lb/ft40.9 lb
#81 in (25.4 mm)2.670 lb/ft53.4 lb

Metric bars use weight (kg/m) = diameter² ÷ 162.2 (diameter in mm), the same formula as our TMT Steel Weight Calculator.

Tips for placing rebar

  • Support the mat on chairs or concrete dobies so it sits in the middle of the slab, not on the ground.
  • Tie intersections with wire — every other intersection is usually enough for slabs on ground.
  • Stagger lap splices so they don’t all fall on the same line.
  • Keep bars clean — light surface rust is fine, but remove mud, oil and loose scale.
  • Add bars around openings and at re-entrant corners to control cracking.
  • Check local requirements: many building departments require an inspection of the rebar before the concrete is poured.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate how much rebar I need for a slab?

In each direction, the number of bars = (slab width − 2 × edge cover) ÷ spacing + 1, and each bar is the slab length minus the cover at both ends. Add the two directions together. A 20 × 10 ft slab with #4 bars at 12 in and 3 in cover needs 10 bars of 19.5 ft and 20 bars of 9.5 ft — 385 ft of rebar.

How much does rebar weigh per foot?

Standard US (ASTM A615) weights: #3 0.376 lb/ft, #4 0.668, #5 1.043, #6 1.502, #7 2.044 and #8 2.670 lb/ft. The bar number is its diameter in eighths of an inch: #4 is ½ in.

What spacing should rebar be in a slab?

For residential patios and driveways, #3 or #4 bars at 12–18 in on centre each way are common. Structural slabs follow an engineer’s design. Keep the bars in the middle third of the slab thickness, supported on chairs.

How long should a rebar lap splice be?

A common rule of thumb is 40 bar diameters (20 in for #4), but required lap lengths depend on the concrete strength, bar size and code. Use the length on your drawings when you have one.

How much edge cover does rebar need?

For slabs on ground, ACI 318 calls for about 3 in (75 mm) of cover where concrete is cast against earth, and less (typically 1½–2 in) for top cover. Cover protects the steel from rust.

How many rebar chairs do I need?

Roughly one chair every 3–4 ft each way, so about one per 9–16 ft² of slab. Use more for heavier bars or where workers will walk on the mat.
