About the tola, masha and ratti
The tola is a traditional South Asian unit of mass, standardised in British India at 180 troy grains — exactly 11.6638038 grams. It is still the everyday unit for buying gold and silver in Pakistan, Nepal and many parts of India and the Gulf, even though official prices are quoted per 10 grams. A tola is divided into 12 masha, and each masha into 8 ratti. The ratti was originally the weight of a seed of the gunja plant and is still used for gemstones in astrology, where some sellers use a slightly different “pakki ratti” — ask which one is meant.
Silver rates per tola and per kg
Silver is usually quoted per kilogram in India and per tola in Pakistan and Nepal. To convert a per-kg rate to per tola, divide by 1,000 and multiply by 11.6638: at ₹90,000 per kg, one tola of silver is worth about ₹1,050. To go from a per-tola rate to per kg, divide by 11.6638 and multiply by 1,000. Choose “1 kg (silver)” in the price box and the converter does this for you.
Buying gold: what else to check
- Purity: 24K is 99.9% gold, 22K is 91.6%, 18K is 75%. Rates are usually quoted for 24K or 22K — make sure you compare the same purity.
- Hallmark: in India, look for the BIS hallmark and the 6-digit HUID code.
- Making charges and wastage can add 8–25% to the metal value.
- GST in India is 3% on the gold value and 5% on making charges.
