How to use the dog age calculator
- Enter your dog’s age in years — use decimals for months (1.5 = 18 months).
- Choose your dog’s adult size. For a puppy, choose the size it will be when grown.
- Read the age in human years, your dog’s life stage and the DNA-based estimate.
How dog years are calculated
First year = 15 human years Second year = +9 (24 in total) Each year after that = about +4 (small), +5 (medium), +6 (large), +7 (giant) DNA-based estimate = 16 × ln(dog age) + 31
The first two steps follow the veterinary rule of thumb published by the American Veterinary Medical Association and repeated by the American Kennel Club. The yearly steps after age two are approximate and widen with size, reflecting the shorter lifespans of large breeds.
Worked examples
- A 5-year-old medium dog: 24 + 3 × 5 = 39 human years.
- A 10-year-old small dog: 24 + 8 × 4 = 56 human years — a senior.
- A 4-year-old giant breed: 24 + 2 × 7 = 38 human years, already close to senior age for its size.
- A 6-month-old puppy: about 7½ human years — a fast-growing child.

Estimates using the rule above. Giant breeds rarely reach 14.
Life stages and care
- Puppy (under 1 year): vaccinations, socialisation, training and puppy food. Large breeds grow until 18–24 months.
- Young adult (1–2 years): high energy; switch to adult food and keep up training.
- Adult: yearly checkups, dental care and weight control — the dog food calculator helps keep portions right.
- Senior: twice-yearly vet visits, joint care, softer exercise and watching for changes in weight, thirst, appetite or behaviour.
Why the “× 7” rule is wrong
Multiplying by seven assumes dogs age at the same speed all their lives. In reality a one-year-old dog can already breed and is physically close to an adult, much like a mid-teen human, so the first year counts for far more than seven. After the second year ageing slows, but it stays faster for larger breeds. That is why modern charts use a size-based approach and why the DNA-based formula curves steeply early on and flattens later.
Signs your dog is getting older
Grey hair around the muzzle, slower starts after rest, more sleep, cloudy eyes, dental problems and weight changes are common signs of ageing. None of these mean your dog is unwell, but they are a good reason to book a checkup. Many age-related problems, such as arthritis, dental disease and kidney changes, are easier to manage when they are caught early.
